At first you might drive right by it. The address is on a mailbox, but there is no winery name. You think to yourself, ‘this can't be it' but then you see the winery paraphernalia in the back. So you drive up the driveway and park beside a non descript building where Stephane Vivier awaits you with a welcoming smile. You have arrived at HdV winery. In these glasses you will taste centuries of experience, starting with the de Villaine family from Burgundy and ending with the very respected Hyde family of California. The de Villaines are known for great Pinot. The Hyde's are known for growing and producing great grapes. Together with the expert wine making of Stephane Vivier, you get wonderfully made Carneros wine

The Chardonnay is bright and buttery. The Cab/Merlot blend is a pleasant surprise coming from Carneros, but the Syrah steals the show. The opening act is the nose. It has what I call "the good stink." The "good stink" is that stink that draws you to buy stinky cheese..and then savor each bite. The show continues with a wine that screams for food on the palate. The curtain call is the finish, long and spicy. At the end of the show Stephane Vivier, who call himself "a nanny for the grapes," hopes you leave with a picture of the vineyard in your glass. Indeed, you will.
